William Prout

William Prout William Prout (1785-1850) published Prout's hypothesis: that the atomic weight of every atom is an exact and integral multiple of the hydrogen atom in 1815.

The discovery of isotopes (atoms of the same element but having different masses) in the 20th century bore this out.
