Thomas Octave Murdoch Sopwith (1888-1989) was a English designer of the Sopwith Camel biplane, used in World War I, and joint developer of the Hawker Hurricane fighter plane used in World War II.Short Biography:
From a Northumbrian engineering family, Sopwith gained a pilot's licence in 1910 and soon after set a British aerial duration record for a flight of three hours 12 minutes.
In 1912 he founded the Sopwith Aviation Company, which in 1920 he wound up and reopened as the Hawker Company, after the chief test pilot Harry Hawker.
The Hawker Company was responsible for the Hawker Hart bornber, the Hurricane, and eventually the vertical take-off Harrier jump jet.
