His parents are drama teachers, Arend and Teunke. He spent his childhood in Amsterdam. He studied in a night school for 3 years and besides he worked as electrician.
In earlier stages, he joined in an experimental group. After spending 5 succesful years in the troupe he acted in a TV series "Floris" in the year 1969. The role in the series made him famous over the country. Then his career went upwards, Turkish Delight is the first film acted and it was a box office hit in home as well as abroad.
