R. Lee Ermey often stars in films in authority roles like Gunnery Sergeant Hartman from Full Metal Jacket, Mayor Tilman in the movie named Mississippi Burning. Sheriff Hoyt in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre or Bill Bowerman in Prefontaine.
He also hosted two military shows on the History Channel, named Mail Call and Lock N' Load with R. Lee Ermey. He spent almost 2 years as a drill instructor in San Diego, California, as a Marine Corps Recruit Depot and in Paris Island from 1965 to 1967. In 1968 he served in Vietnam for 14 months, until in 1969, on the Marine Wing Support Group 17. After this, he was sent to Ja
pan, to Okinawa, where he became Staff Sergeant. He was medically retired in 1972.
He was attending the University of Manila from Philippines when he was choose to play a role in The Boys Company, as a Marine drill instructor. For the next years he played some short roles until in 1987, when he interpreted Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Full Metal Jacket, for which he was nominated to a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor.
