Pol Pot (1925-1998) became a member of the anti-French resistance under Ho Chi Minn in the 1940s and a member of the communist party.
Short Biography:
As leader of the Khmer Rouge, he overthrew the government of General Lon Nol in 1975 and proclaimed a republic of Democratic Kampuchea with himself as prime minister. The policies of the Pol Pot government were to evacuate cities and put people to work in the countryside.
The Khmer Rouge also carried out a systematic extermination of the educated and middle classes before the regime was overthrown by a Vietnamese invasion 1979.
Since then, Pol Pot has led a resistance group against the Vietnamese although he has been tried and convicted, in absentia, of genocide.
