Muhammad (c.570-632) is Founder of Islam, born in Mecca on the Arabian peninsula.

Short Biography:

In about 616 he claimed to be a prophet and that the Koran was revealed to him by God (it was later written down by his followers). He fled from persecution to the town now known as Medina in 622: the flight, Hegira, marks the beginning of the Islamic era.

Originally a shepherd and caravan conductor, he found leisure for meditation by his marriage with a wealthy widow in 595, and received his first revelation in 610.

After some years of secret teaching, he openly declared himself the prophet of God, and, as the number of his followers increased, he was forced to flee to Medina. After the batde of Badr in 623, he was continuously victorious, entering Mecca as the recognized prophet of Arabia 630. The succession was troubled.

Muhammad was a leader who unified the tribes of Arabia into a single religious, Islam.
