Mircea EliadeMircea Eliade was born on March 13, 1907 in Romania but in 1966 he became an American citizen. He was a writer, philosopher, historian, journalist, novelist and essayist.

Biography and Career :

He was a hard working child, he studied a lot and spent his time alone, but from 1925 he had been recognized as a "chief of his generation". He went to the Spiru Haret National Collage and University of Bucharest's Faculty of Philosophy and Letters. The person who had a great impact on his career was his logic and metaphysic teacher, Nae Ionescu. The teacher gave him a job at the Cuvantul newspaper.

In 1928 he finished the novel "Gaudeamus". Because he wanted to a higher intellectual level he learned Italian and made Giovanni Papini his idol. During a travel to Italy he met Papini an d Vittorio Macchioro. Because of his naivety he published a interview with Macchioro where he spokes about some negative impressions on Mussolini's system. This had caused a lot of trouble.

In 1929 he is licensed after a study on Italian Philosophy. Indian philosophy is his second passion. He went to University of Calcutta and studied Sanskrit and Yoga with Surendranath Dasgupta. In 1933 he published the novel "Maitreyi" which became soon very popular and other volumes of literary prose and scientific works between 1932 and 1943.

He became close to the ideology of the Legionary Movement (Iron Guard) and also an activist of it.

"Intoarcerea din Rai" written in 1934 and "Huliganii" written in 1935are both semi-fantastic novels in which Eliade admitted the existence of an extrasensory reality. An important novella is "La Tiganci" (1959) and the novel "Noaptea de Sanziene" (1971).

In 1957 Eliade went to Chicago and decides to remain there as a professor at the University of Chicago. Today the department of Religion's History there is named in his honor.
