Lil Mama (real name Niatia Jessica Kirkland) was born on October 4, 1989 in Harlem, Manhattan, New York City, New York, United States. She is a Grammy Award-nominated American female rapper currently signed to Jive Records.
Biography and Career :
She was raised in an eight children family in Brooklyn and Harlem in New York City. Her mother died in 2007 after a long fight against a destructive disease, cancer. Her family is a musical one, both of her parents being singers, her father also owns a local record label, Familiar Faces.
She began her career as a dancer and in her spare time she wrote poetry and took drama lessons. After some time at the age of ten she started to put her poetry on the beat and mad
e her first rap songs.
She attended Edward R. Murrow High School but she dropped from there and traveled to Atlanta to record with Nappy Roots' producer, James "Groove" Chambers. There she made her debut single "Lip Gloss" and after it got airplayed Lil Mama came in the attention of Jive Records executive Dave Lighty.
In 2007 she signed a contract with Jive Records and began recording more songs, this time with producers such as Swizz Beatz, Scott Storch, Dr. Luke, Cool, and Dr. Dre.
She has been featured on remixes to various singles including "Girlfriend" (Avril Lavigne), "Umbrella" (Rihanna), "Gimme More" (Britney Spears), "Just Fine" (Mary J. Blige) and also featured in the video for Sean Kingston's "Beautiful Girls".
