Kimbo Slice (born as Kevin Ferguson) was born on February 8, 1974, in Nassau, Bahamas. He was the eldest among his 10 brothers and sisters. When Kimbo was a child his family shifted to Miami. Kimbo first got into a fight at school when he had just entered his teens. He is said to have knocked out a school bully that day.
Kimbo attended the Palmetto High School, Miami. He also played football and was a member of his high school football team. At this time, he met Icey Mike, who eventually took up the job of Kimbo's manager. But in 1992, both his home and school were destroyed by the Hurricane Andrew and with it ended the dreams of excelling in athletics as a career option.
He also had a short stint in college until he left it. Then, he became homeless in 1994 and spent his days in his
car.
During this time, he tried to work on several unusual jobs and also began street fighting. He had also worked for RK Netmedia as a bodyguard. They filmed and uploaded the videos of eight fights on the internet. Out them the eight, Kimbo had won in seven fights and lost in only one.
This drew the attention of the MMA executives and soon they signed up Kimbo to fight in the circuit. Kimbo Slice fought for the first time on MMA in June 2007 and defeated his opponent, Ray Mercer, in just 43 seconds. In the post-match interview, Kimbo said that he wanted to fight against David Abbott. Abbott immediately accepted the challenge but the match was cancelled due to several disagreements.
Later on that year, ProElite declared that Kimbo Slice had entered a contract with them. Kimbo was supposed to fight against Mike Bourke in the EliteXC circuit. But Bourke suffered an injury and Kimbo had to fight Bo Cantrell instead. It was no big deal for him and Kimbo defeated Bo in just 19 seconds.
He knocked out David Abbott at EliteXC: Street Certified in February 2008. In May, he defeated James Thompson in EliteXC: Primetime.
