Kaki KingKaki King was born on August 24, 1979, in Marietta, Georgia. She was introduced to music mainly by her father.

Biography and Career:

By the time she was 4, Kaki was already taking guitar lessons. She didn’t continue that for a long time as she preferred the drums. But when she grew up, she was influenced by Kurt Cobain and Nirvana and she decided to start strumming the strings once more.

During her high school years, Kaki played guitars in bands with Morgan Jahnig, her boyfriend. After high school, they entered New York University and Kaki got a degree in humanities. She kept on playing the drums but shifted to guitar. Her music soon gained popularity at the cafes, parties and subway stations.

Kaki had taken up the job of a waitress at the Mercury Lounge. It was a meet ing place of rising musicians. There she gradually learned the technique to influence an audience. This experience let her play a strong performance at the club’s stage. With her subway CD, she got the chance for repeated performances at The Knitting Factory. There she was found by Jeff Krasno of Velour Records. Within 12 months, Kaki King released her debut album Everybody Loves You, in 2003.

After meeting Preston Reed, one of her influences, she followed his style in her sophomore album, Legs to Make Us Longer, in 2004. Her next album was …Until We Felt Red in 2006. It featured the maximum duration of vocals by Kaki ever.
With three album releases in such a short time, she received a larger publicity. She toured with the Velour-represented Lettuce and also performed with The Blue Man Group. Soon enough she was invited to TV shows by David Letterman, Conan O’ Brien and Carson Daly.

She was accepted as the first female Guitar God by the Rolling Stones magazine in 2007. Next, she adorned the spot of guest guitarist for The Coin of Tegan and Sara’s and also with the Foo Fighter’s Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace. She also recorded the soundtrack for Sean Penn’s Into the Wild in 2007.

Why is she famous?

Kaki King is famous a guitarist, playing a fusion of genres like alt rock, jazz and anything she felt like. She was given the title of the first ever female Guitar God by Rolling Stones magazine. She has also played with a number of bands as guest, including Dave Grohl’s Foo Fighters and also gave music for the film Into the Wild (2007) of Sean Penn.
