Before being an actress she had worked at Baskin-Robbins. She studied at the Francis W. Parker School. In 1980 she debuted as an actress in the movie "My Bodyguard".
After a period of time she decided to put on hold her career in order to graduate from Yale. The roles of Alexandra "Alex" Owens in "Flashdance" and of Bette Porter on the lesbian-themed drama series "The L Word" made her famous.
Quentin Tarantino is a friend of hers and they were seen together in "Four Rooms".
Between 1986 and 1996 she was married to Alexandre Rockwell. On June 14, 1998 she married Ken Dixon. They have one girl who was born in October 2005.
