Franz Kafka

Franz KafkaFranz Kafka was born on July 3, 1883, in Prague. He is one of the most important German-language novelists and short story writers of the 20th century.

Biography and Career :

He was the first child of the six children of Hermann Kafka and Julia Lowy, a German speaking Jewish family.

In 1901 he started to study Law School because of his father wish. In 1902 assisted to a conference about Schopenhauer and meat the author of this conference Max Brod who would become his best friend and a very important person for posterity: he published most of Kafka's hand writings.

Between 1906-1908 he took his doctorate in Law and started to work at Prague Law Court.

In 1909 he published in Hyperion Magazine a group of 8 stories under the title "Contemplation".

1912 is the most prolific year of his career: he wrote in one night 22-23th of September the novel "The Judgment", he wrote in 6 weeks the first chapters from "America" and in December wrote "The Metamorphosis".

Between 1913-1914 were published "The Judgment" and wrote "In the penal colony" and "The village schoolmaster" which were published in 1919.

In May 1914 he got engaged with Felice Bauer and after 2 months broke with her after dramatic facts.

In August 1917 he had the first crisis of haemophtisia and from 1921 started to live in climacteric places for treatment of tuberculosis. In 1922 he started to write "The castle" but he didn't finished it.

He passed away in Vienna on June 3, 1924 and was buried on June 11, in New Jewish Cemetery in Prague.
