Choderlos de Laclos

Choderlos de LaclosChoderlos de Laclos (full name Pierre Ambroise Francoise Choderlos de Laclos ) was born on October 18, 1741 in Amiens, France as the second son of a noble family. He is a famous French novelist.

Biography and Career :

In 1760 he was admitted at Artillery School in La Fere and after one year became first sub-lieutenant and then lieutenant.

Between 1763-1778 Laclos he worked in a lot of garrisons: Toul (1763), Strasbourg (1765-1769), Grenoble (1769-1775), Besancon (1775-1776), Valence (1777) and again Besancon (1778) where he became captain.

He wrote minor writings like: "Epitre a Margot" (1770), "Les Souvenirs, Epitre a Egle" (1773), "Epitre a la mort" (1777).

In 1777 he also wrote "Ernestine", a comedy which was a failure.

While he was supervising the construction of the fortifications in Aix Island he started to write "Les Liaisons dangereuses" ("Dangerous Liaisons" ).

In April 1782 he published "Dangerous Liaisons" in Paris and started an enormous scandal. After one year he met Marie Solange Duperre and in 1786 they got married.

He wrote the essay "About Women and Their Education" in 1783, but it would stay as handwriting until 1903.

His first son was born in 1784.

In 1786 after he published a pamphlet in which he criticized Marshal de Vauban he was sent to Metz and La Fere until 1788, when he became secretary of duke of Orleans.

In the same year was born his daughter Catherine.

In 1792 for his merits he turned back in the army as brigade general and after Pirinei's Army's commander and in the end governor of eastern French colonies, few days after his daughter's death.

The duke of Orleans was executed in 1793 and Laclos went to prison and condemned to guillotine, but was released in 1794.

In 1795 was born his second son, Charles.

In 1800 Napoleon Bonaparte gave him the command of Rhin's Army, with general quarter in Strasbourg.

In 1803 soon after he was named commander of Neapoleon's Artilery he passed away of malaria in Tarento.
