Charles Townes (born in 1915) is an American physicist who, while working at Columbia, New York, succeeded in 1953, against much competition, in designing and constructing the first maser (the microwave equivalent of the laser). For this work, he shared the 1964 Nobel Prize for Physics with the Soviet physicists Basov and J. Prokhorov.
