Branco Camilo Castelo (1825-1890) was a Portuguese novelist.
Short Biography:
His work fluctuates between mysticism and Bohemianism, and includes "Amor de perdicao" (Love of Perdition) in 1862, written during his imprisonment for adultery, and "Novelas do Minho" in 1875, stories of the rural north.
Illegitimate and then orphaned, he led a dramatic life. Other works include "Onde estd a felicidade?" (Where is Happiness?) in 1856 and "A brazileira de Prazins" (The Brazilian girl from Prazins) in 1882.
Created a viscount in 1885, he committed suicide whep overtaken by blindness.
