Ziaur Rahman was born on January 19, 1936 in Calcutta, India and died on Chittagong, Bangladesh. He was famous as Lt. Colonel, Major General and President of Bangladesh.
Biography and Career:
After his education Ziaur Rahman joined the Army In 1953 and was commissioned in 1955 later on he went to West Germany for training and spent some time with the British army. In 1970 he was transferred to the newly raised Eighteen East Bengal Regiment at Chittagong.
In Chittagong he felt disgust for the Pakistan army and he made the historic announcement of independence for the 75 million people of Bangladesh on March 26 & 27, 1971.
In 1971 he was promoted to the post of Lt. Colonel after that he was rapidly promoted from one rank to another. He was promoted to the rank of Major
General in 1973. Very soon he became the Chief Martial Law Administrator. Major General Ziaur Rahman was sworn as The President of Bangladesh on April 21st, 1977.
After becoming the President he formed a political party named as Bangladesh Nationalist Party. He was married to Begum Khaleda Zia who later became the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
