Yoweri Kaguta Museveni (born in 1945) led the opposition to Idi Amin's regime (1971-1978) and was minister of defence (1979-1980) but, unhappy with Milton Obote's autocratic leadership, formed the National Resistance Army (NRA), which helped to remove him. Museveni leads a broad-based coalition government.
Short Biography:
Museveni was educated in Uganda and at the University of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. He entered the army, eventually rising to the rank of general. Until Amin's removal Museveni led the anti-Amin Front for National Salvation.
When Obote was ousted in a coup by Tito Okello in 1985, Museveni entered into a brief power-sharing agreement with Okello, before taking over as president.
