Woodrow Wilson

Q:   Ask a Question about Woodrow Wilson
Woodrow Wilson The 28th President of the United States, Thomas Woodrow Wilson was born on Sunday, December 28, 1856 in Staunton, Virginia, USA.

Biography and Career:

He served as President from March 4, 1913 to March 4, 192. Thomas Woodrow was also 34th Governor of New Jersey and he remained on the post from January 17, 1911 to March 1, 1913. T. Wilson has also honor of being 13th President of Princeton University from 1902 to 1910. Wilson was the only President to hold a PhD degree and also only President to serve in a political office in New Jersey before election to the Presidency. More important, he was only the second Democrat in the White House since the Civil War.

Woodrow Wilson was elected for first term in 1913 to 1917. From the start of his presidency he focused on revenue and i n late 1913 he took a plan that had been designed by conservative Republicans, led by Senator Nelson W. Aldrich, and worked with the Democratic majority in Congress to pass a compromise bill. During his first presidency period some of the achievements are following. He introduced a series of programs targeted at farmers. The Smith Lever act of 1914 created the modern system of agricultural extension agents sponsored by the state agricultural colleges. In this plan the agents taught new techniques to farmers. The 1916 Federal Farm Loan Board issued low-cost long-term mortgages to farmers. Wilson spent the beginning of 1917 trying to keep America out of the war in Europe. He offered to be a mediator, but neither the Allies nor the Central Powers took his requests seriously. Republicans strongly criticized Wilson's refusal to build up the U.S. Army in anticipation of the threat of war. In this way Wilson won the support of the U.S. peace element by arguing that an army buildup would provoke war.

President Wilson was re-elected for the president in 1917 and took the decision to head for the war when Germany started unrestricted submarine warfare in early 1917, despite the promises made in the Arabic pledge and the Sussex pledge, and attempted to enlist Mexico as an ally and this results Wilson to took America into World War I as a war to make "the world safe for democracy." He did not sign a formal alliance with the United Kingdom or France but operated as an "Associated" power. However his planning was excellent which prevented US from great loss.
