William Saroyan, an American dramatist and writer, was born on Monday, August 31, 1908. Most of his stories and writings were based on the depiction of Armenian-American life in California.
Biography and Career:
Saroyan was born in the small town of Fresno situated in California . His parents were Armenian immigrants. After his father's death, he along with his siblings was raised in an orphanage in California. He was there for five years and then he started to live with his mother at Fresno after his mother got a job at a cannery. He started and continued his education doing many types of odd jobs.
Saroyan wanted to be a writer after he had shown some writings by his father. He started writings and some of his early writings were published in Overland Monthly. His first c
ollection of stories appeared in 1930s. A story named The Broken Wheel got popularity. When it was published in the Armenian journal called Hairenik in the year of 1933. "My name is Aram" was his first collection of short stories and it became an international bestseller. The story was about a young person and his immigrant family. The story collection was translated in many languages.
His breakthrough story "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze" was published in the Story magazine in the year 1934. The story was based on a young writer who had been starving but till had been trying to survive himself in this depression ridden society. Saroyan served in the US army during the World war II. He married actress Carol Marcus with whom he has got two children. He died at 72 after suffering from Prostate Cancer.
