Washington Irving (1783-1859) was an American essayist and short-story writer.
Short Biography:
He published a mock-heroic History of New York in 1809, supposedly written by the Dutchman "Diedrich Knickerbocker".
In 1815 he went to England where his publications include The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent in 1820, which contained such stories as "Rip van Winkle" and "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow".
