Viorel Padina (pseudonym of Viorel Abalaru) - Poet. Also journalist. Born on October 29th 1950 in Gura-Padinii (Olt) he is the son of Stefan Abalaru, a fisherman, and of Paulina Abalaru.
After graduating from the secondary school in Corabia in 1969, he was educated at the Faculty of Law at the University of Bucharest, where he graduated in 1979. He was a member of various literary circles, such as: “Amfiteatru” literary circle, the “Monday Literary Circle” / “Cenaclul de Luni” (whose director was literary critic and professor Nicolae Manolescu), Cezar Ivanescu’s literary circle. After 1989, he joined the group of the literary review “Calende” in Pitesti.
He made his debut in print in March 1975 with an essay published in “Amfiteatru” literary review. In 1982 hi
s book manuscript Steel Poem / Poemul de otel won the debut award of Cartea Româneasca publishing house, but it was published only later in 1991 by the same publisher. This is the only volume he has published so far. He contributed poems and articles to the following literary reviews, among others: “Amfiteatru”, “Viata studenteasca”, “România literara”, “Luceafarul”, the literary and artistic supplement of “Scinteia tineretului”, “Flacara”, “Arges”, “Calende”, “Contrapunct”, “Zig-Zag”, as well as to newspapers “România libera”, “Olt Press”, and others. Some of his poems werw published in the Antology of the Poetry of the ‘80s Generation / Antologia poeziei generatiei ‘80 edited by Alexandru Musina (Vlasie, 1993) and in the Antology of Romanian Poetry / Antologia poeziei românesti culte edited by Florin Sindrilaru (Teora, 1998).
At present, the author is a councellor of a commercial firm in Corabia. His poetry was reviewed by: M. N.
