Q:   Ask a Question about Veronica Micle
Veronica MicleVeronica Micle was born on April 22, 1850 in Nasaud, Romania and died on August 3, 1889 in Varatec, Romania. She was a poet and she is also known as the women who conquered Mihai Eminescu's (the greatest Romanian poet of all times) heart.

Biography and Career :

Ilie Campeanu and his wife Ana were her parents. She was their second child. Her father died before she was born and her mother decided to move to Targu Neamt in Moldavia in 1850. After three years they settled in Iasi. She attended the primary school and the Iasi Central School for Girls and graduated in 1863. Professor Stefan Micle, the Rector of the University of Iasi, was the person who examined her at the graduation exam. They fell in love and at the Bob Church, in Cluj, they got married on August 7, 1864. Her hus band was 30 years older than her. The couple had two children, Virginia and Valeria. Virinia turned out to be a poet and married Eduard Gruber, while Valeria was an opera singer with the "stage" name Hilda.

In 1872 Veronica published her first poems in Noul Curier Roman and after a few years she also published in Columna lui Traian and Convorbiri literare. She met Mihai Eminescu while being in Vienna in March 1872. It is known that her love lasted as long as they lived. In 1875 their relation became a romantic one. At first he came to the literary salon that she hosted and they ended dedicating poems to each other. Eminescu had to go to Bucharest in 1877 to edit the newspaper "Timpul" and in her volume of poems there has been so much sadness.

In 1979 her husband passed away and her financial situation wasn't pretty good. She had to go to Bucharest and there she looked for a pension. The poet named her fiance, but in 1883 the doctors diagnosed him with syphilis. She helped and encouraged him, but unfortunately in June 1889 he died. Varatec Monastery was her refugee after these events and she put together the volume of poems "Love and Poetry", a volume which included both her poems and Eminescu's. She took arsenic and died on August 3, 1889 in the monastery. Her body was buried there and her house in Targu Neamt is now a museum.
