Vasile Maftei was born on the January 1, 1981 in Falticeni, Suceava, Romania. He is a famous Romanian football player.

Biography and Career :

Vasile Maftei started his professional career at the age of 19 in B Division (second Romanian League) at Tractorul Brasov.

There he didn't play too much, only a half of season, in six games, but scored once.

In the pause of that season was remarked by Mircea Lucescu and was transferred in the First Romanian League at Rapid Bucharest.

Vasile Maftei debuted for Rapid on April 22, 2001 in a game against the team from his natal town, Foresta Suceava. That was a good game for his team which won with 4-1.

In the first two seasons in Rapid he didn't play too much, being more a substitute player, but in 2002 when Mircea Rednic becam e the coach of the team Vasile Maftei started to be a basic player for his team.

The season 2002-2003 was very good for him because he played in 29 games and scored three times and also in that season Rapid won the championship.

In the First Romanian League Vasile Maftei played only for Rapid in 121 games and scored five goals.

During the years he was the best player in defense and soon became the captain of the team.

In the season 2005-2006 Vasile Maftei won the title of vice-champion with Rapid.

In the European Cups he played in UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League, but the best season was in 2005-2006 in UEFA Cup when Rapid succeeded to play in the quarters of final and was eliminated after two equal games with Steaua Bucharest. They got there after they eliminated very powerful teams like Feyernord Rotterdam, Hertha Berlin and Hamburg and succeeded to beat in the phase group teams like PAOK Salonik, Shakhtar Donets and Rennes.

For the Romanian National Team he debuted on the 28th of February 2006 in a game against Armenia and succeeded to score his first goal there. Romania won with 2-0.

He also played in other three games for the Romanian National Team.
