Vasco Nunez de Balboa was born in Jerez de los Caballeros in Badajoz, Spain in 1474 and died in 1519.
Balboa was a offspring of the lords of the castle of Balboa, near Villafranca de los Barros, in Badajoz. He was a Spanish explorer, governer. He was the third boy among four boys of his family. His mother was a beautibul lady of Badajoz and his father was the hidalgo Nuno Arias de balboa.
In 1500 when the news of Christopher Columbus voyages to the New World became famous he was motivated by his mother and he decided for his first voyage to the Americas, along with Juan de la Cosa on Rodrigo de Bastidas expedition. He was the first European who crossed the Isthmus of Panama
to the Pacific Ocean in 1513. He explored Caribbean coasts from the east of Panama, Colombian coast and continued to explore the north east of South America. In 1500 He traveled to the New World and after some close and thorough search settled on the island of Hispaniola.
Balboa became governor of Veragua when the ship of Nicuesa disappeared into the sea.
He was married with Maria de Pegnalosa one of Pedrarias' daughters, who was in Spain. Balboa was died in 1519.
