Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) was a Japanese artist of the ukiyo-e ("floating world") school, who created muted colour prints of beautiful women, including informal studies of prostitutes.
His style was distinctive: his subject is often seen close up, sometimes from unusual angles or viewpoints, and he made use of bold curvaceous lines and highly decorative textiles.
