Umberto Eco

Umberto EcoUmberto Eco was born on January 16, 1932 in Alessandria (Piemonte), Italy. He is an Italian medievalist, philosopher and novelist.

Biography and Career :

Umberto Eco was born in the city of Alessandria in the region of Piedmont. His father was an account and wanted him to be a lawyer. During World War II, Umberto and his mother, Giovanna, moved to a small village in the Piedmontese mountainside.

He graduated the University of Turin where he studied medieval philosophy and literature. Eco took his doctorate in phylosophy in 1954.

The writer worked as a cultural editor for the RAI television and also had a job at the University of Turin between 1956–1964.

In 1956 he published his first book "Il problema estetico di San Tommaso".
He married in September 1962 Renate Ramg e, an art teacher who was born in Germany.

From 1959 he was editorial councilor of the famous publishing house Bompiani.
He was a teacher in the University of Bologna from 1971 and one of the founders of VS. Quaderni di studi semiotici, Marcatre and Quindici magazines.

Umberto Eco received many awardes and distinctions, including the Honour Legiun Medal in 1993.

Umberto Eco was a teacher in many Universities all over the world and in over 50 of them he was Doctor Honoris Cauza.

Humberto wrote the novels: "The Name of the Rose" in 1980 and received The Strega Prize and The Best Book of th Year Prize for it; "Foucault's Pendulum" in 1988 and received The Bancarella Prize; "The Island of the Day Before" in 1994. He also wrote studies on philosophy and books for children.

The novel "The Name of the Rose" is about a monk who investigates a series of murders which happened around a monastery library and resolves them.

His work was appreciated and he became famous.
