Traian Basescu

Traian BasescuTraian Basescu was born on November 4, 1951 in Murfatlar - near Constanta, today called Basarabi. He is the president of Romania.

Biography and Career :

In 1976 he graduated the Faculty of Navigation – the "Mircea cel Batran" Navy Institute (the trade section).

Between 1976 and 1981 he is a rank III, II and I Marine Officer at "Navrom" shipping company in Constanta. From 1981 till 1989 he is Capitan of "Arges", "Crisana" and "Biruinta" ships (the Biruinta oil tanker was at that time the largest ship of the Romanian fleet.).

He was the chief of Navrom in Anvers, Belgium (1987-1989), sub secretary of state- Chief of Naval Transports Departament (1990-1991).

In 1991 he becomes the Minister of Transports and in 1992- deputy in the Parliament of Romania as a member of the Democratic Party, led by Petre Roman. Also, between 1996 and 2000 he is the Minister of Transports during V.Ciorbea's, R.Vasile's and Mugur Isarescu's government.

In 2000 he is voted Mayor of Bucharest, defeating his adversary–Sorin Oprescu, the PDSR' candidate. In 2004 he is reelected. He obtained his second-term by defeating Mircea Geoana this time.

In 2001 he is elected president of the Democratic Party, outrunning the party's 9 year president- Petre Roman.

In 2004 the main candidates for the presidential elections were Theodor Stolojan, member of "Justice and Truth" Alliance and Adrian Nastase, the prime-minister of Romania at that time and member of the Social-Democratic Party. After the unexpected and shocking withdrawal of Theodor Stolojan from the presidential race, Basescu became the main opponent of Adrian Nastase. Traian Basescu defeated him in the end, becoming president of Romania.

So far, he is a very loved and popular President.

1991-1992 Minister of Transportation in governments headed by P. Roman and T. Stolojan

1992-1996 Deputy of the Democratic Party and Vice-President of the Industry and Services Committee of the Chamber of the Deputies

1996 Managing Director of Mr. Petre Roman's electoral campaign (after resigning from the Parliament and giving up his parliamentarian immunity)

1996 Deputy of the Democratic Party (PD) in Vaslui county, Minister of Transportation in the governments headed by V. Ciorbea, R. Vasile and M. Isãrescu

2000-2001 President of the Bucharest Organization of the Democratic Party (PD)

2001-December 18th, 2004 President of the Democratic Party (PD)

2003-December 18th,2004 Co-President of the D.A. ("Justice and Truth") Alliance
