Bernard Schwartz also known as Tony Curtis, was initially considered the chocolate boy of Hollywood due to his ruggedly handsome features and is considered one of the most distinguished actors of the 1950’s.
Career:
Curtis was born on June 3rd, 1925 at Bronx, New York. He had a tough childhood as he came from a poor impoverished family where his father was a tailor and his mother was a Schizophrenic. Curtis and his brother were sent to an orphanage because his parents couldn’t afford to feed them any longer. Tormented because of his upbringing, Curtis joined a Gang at age of 11 but his neighbor who took pity on the boy made him join Boys Scout which helped him fend off his energy. He then attended Seward Park High School and first acted in a play at the age of 16.
Curtis
even joined the U.S. Navy during World War One. After serving in the war Curtis joined the NYU to study Dramatics. He was soon spotted by a casting director and thus Curtis entered Hollywood at the age of 23 first being signed by Universal Pictures.
Curtis first movies were in 1949 “Criss Cross” and “City across the River” which were not well received with audiences as well as critics.
Almost 8 years later came his two films which jolted his career and made him a super-star named “Sweet Smell of Success” and “The Defiant Ones”.
Although Tony’s career fanned over almost four decades he was the most sought after stars in late 1950’s and early 1960’s. He was into drama and comedy some of his hits being “Some Like it Hot”, “Sex and the Single Girl”, “Spartacus” and “The Great Race”.
Curtis has been married six times and has six children. His last wife was Jill Vandenburg. Curtis was addicted to alcohol and drugs and had to go to a rehabilitation centre.
Curtis released his own biography “American Prince: A memoir” in 2008.
Curtis died due to Heart Attack on September 29th, 2010.
