Titu Maiorescu

Titu MaiorescuTitu Maiorescu was born on February 15, 1840 in Craiova Romania. He was a great Romanian writer, academic teacher, lawyer, literature critic, philosopher, politician, teacher, Romania's prime-minister between 1912 and 1914 and the Romanian Academy's founder.

Biography and Career :

His father was Ioan Maiorescu, teacher at Central School from Craiova and Maria (born Popasu) was his mother.

In September 1851 Titu Maiorescu settles in Vienna with his family and there he graduates first in his class at the Terezien Academy in 1858. After 1 year of studies in Berlin he obtained with "magna cum laude" a masters degree in Giessen, a university degr ee in philosophy and literature at Sorbona, and after 1 year of studies in Paris he obtained a law license.

Titu Maiorescu returns in 1861 in Romania and at the age of only 22 becomes a professor at the University of Iasi (in the same year he marries one of his students- Clara Kremnitz), at 23 -dean and rector, at 27 - member of the Romanian Academy Society, at 30 – deputy , and at 34- minister.

In 1864 he founds along with I. Negruzzi, P. P .Carp, V. Pogor and Th. Rosetty – "Junimea". He was a conserver, representing a new generation and a new conception of the cultural and social life of Romania. Here, in Junimea, he promotes writers like Eminescu, Creanga, Caragiale, Slavici, Duiliu Zamfirescu and more.

In the years to follow he writes :

Titu Maiorescu became politically involved in the affaires of the state. In December 1886 he divorces Clara Kremnitz who was breast-cancer ill. She leaves Romania and soon after that she passed away. One year after, he marries Ana Rosetti. In 1888 he becomes the Minister of culture and in 1912 the Minister of justice. He passed away in 1917 suffering from a hear disease at the age of 77.

About the latin origin of Romanian language, Titu Maiorescu said (quote) : "in momentul in care romanii s-au patruns de adevarul ca limba lor este o limba romana, in acel moment si forma exterioara sub care avea sa se prezinte aceasta, adeca scrierea (...) sau literele trebuiau sa fie luate tot de la romani".
