Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827) Tour of Dr. Syntax in Search of the Picturesque in 1809 and its two sequels (1812-1821) proved very popular.
Short Biography:
Rowlandson studied at the Royal Academy schools and in Paris. Impoverished by gambling, he turned from portrait painting to caricature around 1780. Other works include The Dance of Death 1815-1816 and illustrations for the novelists Smollett, Goldsmith, and Steme.
