Jean Louis Andre Theodore Gericault (1791-1824) was a French Romantic painter.
Short Biography:
The Raft of the Medusa in 1819 (Louvre, Paris) was notorious for exposing a relatively recent scandal in which shipwrecked sailors had been cut adrift and left to drown.
A keen horseman himself (he was killed in a riding accident), he painted The Derby at Epsom in 1821 (Louvre, Paris) and pictures of cavalry. He also painted portraits.
