Themistocles (c. 525-C.460 BC) was largely through his policies in Athens (creating its navy and strengthening its walls) Greece was saved from Persian conquest.
Short Biography:
He fought with distinction in the Battle of Salamis 480 BC during the Persian War. About 470 BC he was accused of embezzlement and conspiracy against Athens, and banished by Spartan influence. He fled to Asia, where Artaxerxes, the Persian king, received him with favour.
