Svetlana Carstean

Svetlana Carstean Svetlana Carstean - poet. Also journalist. She also writes under the pseudonym Svetlana Paul-Badescu.

Born on February 18th 1969 in Botosani, she came from a Moldo-Bukowinean family settled in Botosani, both parents office workers. After graduating the Mathematics-Physics “A. T. Laurian” secondary school in Botosani, she attended the Faculty of Letters at the University of Bucharest (Romanian-French), where she graduated in 1994 and she got an MA degree in Literary Theory / Comparative Literature in 1995.

As a student, she founded and coordinated the literary circle “Central”, along with Razvan Radulescu, T. O. Bobe and Cezar Paul-Badescu, and later she joined “Litere” literary circle at the Faculty of Letters, University of Bucharest (whose director was the poet Mircea Cartarescu) .

In 1993 she made her debut in print with poetry in the review “Adevarul Literar si Artistic”. Her name first featured in the anthology Family Picture / Tabou de familie (together with Sorin Gherguţ, Razvan Radulescu, Cezar Paul-Badescu, T. O. Bobe and Mihai Ignat; Leka Brancus, 1995).

A selection of her poems translated into English appeared in the anthology Romanian Poets of the ‘80s and ‘90s edited by Andrei Bodiu, Romulus Bucur and Georgeta Moarcas (Paralela 45, 1999). She contributed poetry and articles to the following literary reviews: “Luceafarul”, “Adevarul Literar si Artistic”, “22”, “Dilema”, “Interval”, “Euresis”, “L’Invitation”, “Cartea” and “Exces”.

She was awarded the poetry prize for a first publication by the literary review “Tomis” (1995). The Association of Professional Writers in Romania - ASPRO, nominated her for a poetry award.

At present, she is a teacher of French at the primary school No. 23 in Bucharest and also a contributor to “Exces” magazine. Her work was reviewed by the following critics: Ioana Parvulescu (“Romania literara”, no. 35/1995); Vitalie Ciobanu - Symptoms of the New Literature / Simptome ale literaturii noi (“Contrafort”, no. 6/1996); Dan Silviu Boerescu (“Cartea”, no. 2/1996), and others.
