Stieg Larsson was born on August 15, 1954, in Skelleftehamn, Sweden. Following journalism as a career, he joined Tidningarnas Telegrambyri¥ as a graphic artist in 1977. Later on, he became a news reporter and then a feature writer.
In 1995, Stieg Larsson started the quarterly magazine, Expo, where he wrote against racism and the corrupt practices of anti democracy and far-right organizations. The magazine soon gathered popularity in Sweden and Larsson was invited to a number of lectures to present his research on these subjects.
In the meantime, he started writing detective fiction. In 2001, he began this as a diversion and soon found out that he could do more than just having a pleasant diversion out of detective fiction. In 3 years, he had completed
two books.
Seeing the depth of his writings, one of his friends asked publisher Eva Gedin to read his books. Gedin recognised the talent in Stieg Larsson's writing and signed him to a three book deal on the spot. Soon after, the first book of the series, named "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" was released.
But Stieg Larsson suffered from a heart attack and passed away on November 9, 2004, in Stockholm.
But the book, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" became a bestseller and sold over 3 million copies in Sweden itself. It also received awards from a number of prestigious organizations which included the award for the best Nordic crime novel from the Glass Key award in 2005.
The second book of the Millenium series, "The Girl Who Played with Fire" was released in 2006. It received the award for the best Swedish crime novel from the Swedish Crime Fiction Academy that year.
The first book of this series is being made into a film and is scheduled for release in 2009 in Norway.
Why is he famous?
Stieg Larsson is famous as the author of the trilogy named "The Millenium Series". The trilogy was published after his death and they have received wide recognitions.
