Stavros Niarchos was born in Athens, Greece on July 3, 1909 to father Spyros Niarchos and mother Eugenia Coumandaros aand he died on April 16, 1996 in Zurich, Switzerland. Stavros is known as being a shipping tycoon, sometimes known as The Golden Greek.
Stavros parents had a business in Buffalo, New York and then returned in Greece a few months before he was born. Stavros graduated the University of Athens and hired at Coumandaros family grain business.
Stavros is the founder of Niarchos Ltd. International shipping company. In 1952 he built a supertanker capable of transporting large quantity of oil. Thanks to booming business ideas his company increased and he became a billionaire.
Stavros Niarchos was married five times and he had two daughters: Marie and Elena, and three sons:
Philippe, Spyros and Konstantin.
In chronological order, his wives were: daughter of Admiral Constantine Sporides, Helen Sporides; Melpomene Capparisl; daughter of shipping magnate Stavros G. Livanos, Eugenia Livanos; American automotive heiress and socialite Charlote Ford, daughter of Henry Ford ll and last but not at least wife Eugenia’s sister Athina Marchioness of Blandford.
After the oil crisis, Stavros Niarchos entered in finances and diamond business. Later he started to deal with art.
In old age Stavros could not detach from his entrepreneurial spirit and he invested in one more business, this time in horse racing. He opened stable of horses in France and United Kingdom.
After his death in 1996, Maria Niarchos Gouaze has been taking charge of Stavros racing operations. Stavros’s remains rest between his rest of family in Lausanne.
