He didn’t go out to mainstream Hollywood movies, but insisted on making movies that reflected his thoughts and ideals. This attitude resulted in movies like “Mo’ Better Blues” (1990) and “Malcolm X”. Spike Lee didn’t care about the failure of these movies in the box office as long as they told the story he wanted to say.
His next movies, “Bamboozled” and “Girl 6” had a high political content. The audience did not like this and his next movie “She Hate Me” (2004) suffered huge financial loss and high criticism.

Spike Lee decided to add some Hollywood spice in his next movie “Inside Man” (2006). It became a hit and earned around 90 million USD.
But he didn’t go far from his political thoughts. In the four-episode series on HBO, named “When the Levees Break”, he criticized the government for the poor reaction to the Hurricane Katrina.
2008 saw him working on “Miracle at St. Anna”, a drama based on the World War II. He also made a documentary on Michael Jordan and began working on the 2nd part of “Inside Man”.
