
Sorin Ghionea was born on May 11, 1979 in Galati, Romania. He is a famous Romanian football player.
Biography and Career :
He started to play football in 1997 at the local team in the town where he was born, Dunarea Galati for which he played 15 games.
In 1998 the first team in his town, Otelul Galati, transferred him. He debuted in A Division (First Romanian League) for Otelul Galati in a game against FC National Bucharest which his team won it with 3-2. He played here 5 seasons until 2004 with a pause in 2002-2003 when he played for Steaua Bucharest.
For Otelul Galati he played in 88 games and succeeded to score two goals.
In the season 2002-2003 he was transferred to Steaua Bucharest where won the vice-champion title but didn't play too much, only six games, and h
ad to turn back to Otelul.
In 2004, the ex-president of Otelul Galati, now manager of Steaua Bucharest, Mihai Stoica, took him back to the team from Bucharest.
Sorin Ghionea became near Dorin Goian a basic player for Steaua Bucharest especially after he took Mirel Radoi's place in the central defense after he was injured for a couple of time.
When Mirel Radio came back in the first team he was put to play in the midfield and Ghionea kept his place.
Now the specialists in A Division say that Goian and Ghionea are the best central defenders.
With Steaua Bucharest he played two seasons in 53 games and succeeded to win two consecutive champion titles in 2005 and 2006.
In the European Cups he debuted with Steaua in UEFA Cup in the season 2004-2005 which was very good for them because they succeeded to qualify in the European Spring after more than 10 years.
Steaua passed from a group with Standard Liege, Sampdoria, Besiktas Istanbul and Athletic Bilbao and also eliminated after this the ex-winner of UEFA Cup, Valencia.
The next season in UEFA Cup was even better because Steaua played in the semi-finals after defeated teams like Lens, Heerenven, Betis Sevilla and in the quarter-finals Rapid Bucharest, one of their traditional Romanian rivals. In the semi-final was eliminated by Middlebrough after two fantastic games.
For Romanian National team Ghionea debuted on the 27th of March 2002 when Romania defeated Ukraine, with 4-1. He also played in other five games against: Georgia, Eire, Finland, Macedonia and Albania.
