Adopted name of Isabella Baumfree, subsequently Isabella Van Wagener (1797-1883) was born a slave, she obtained her freedom and that of her son, and became involved with religious groups.
On 1843 she was "commanded in a vision" to adopt the name Sojourner Truth. She published an autobiography, The Narrative of Sojourner Truth in 1850.
