Biography and Career
Senta is the daughter of Josef Berger, a musician and Therese Jany who is a teacher. She is not from a well-off family but her parents tried to giver her comfortable life. She first performed on the stage when she was only four years old accompanied by her father playing piano while she was singing. At the age of five, she attended ballet lessons but her dream to become a dancer did not come true after being rejected by her teacher due to physical changes during puberty age.
With her strong desire to improve her acting skills, Senta undergone a private acting lessons. Luckily in 1957, she got her first small role film. She then applied in the well-known a
cting school in Vienna and was also accepted.
Before she entered Hollywood, Senta was starred in the movie 'The Good Soldier Schweijk' produced by Arthur Brauner and Bernhard Wicki. She worked with Brauner in several projects but eventually get tired of doing musicals. In Hollywood, she had the chance to work with Frank Sinatra, Charlton Heston, John Wayne, Richard Widmark, and Yul Brynner. After projects in Hollywood she went back to Germany for long term projects.
As a producer, Senta met Michael Verhoeven the son of Paul Vernhoeven, who is film director, and they build up their own production company in 1965. This was the start of their partnership that eventually ended up in marriage in 1966. She made a film in 1970 which was produced by them and directed by her husband. They made several projects together that became internationally recognized like 'The Terrible Girl (Das schreckliche Mädchen)', 'Die weiße Rose' and 'Mutters Courage'. She was also well known in other countries like Italy and France.
Senta played in the movie 'Cast a Giant Shadow' as Magda in 1966 with together with Kirk Douglas and 'The Quiller Memorandum' in the same year. Moreover, in television, she did the series 'It Takes a Thief' which was aired in ABC on January 9, 1969.
After giving birth, Senta went back to theatre where she played at Burgtheater in Vienna, Schillertheater in Berlin and Thaliatheater in Hamburg. She played 'Buhlschaft' in the 'Jedermann at the Salzburg Festival. In addition, she was part of the movie 'Cross of Iron' and in TV series 'Kir Royal' and 'The Fast Genti' as a taxi driver. In 2005, she starred in the film 'Einmal so wie ich will'.
