Sebastiano del Piombo (c. 1485-1547) moved to Rome in 1511, where his friendship with Michelangelo and rivalry with Raphae inspired him to his greatest works, such as The Raising of Lazarus 1517-1519 (National Gallery, London).

One of the greatest Venetian painters of the High Renaissance, Sebastiano was a pupil of Giorgione. Michelangelo encouraged him and provided designs for his work, including The Flagellation (San Pietro in Montorio, Rome).
