Sappho (c.612-580 BC) was a Greek lyric poet, friend of the poet Alcaeus, and leader of a female literary coterie at Mytilene (modern Lesvos, hence lesbianism); legend says she committed suicide when her love for the boatman Phaon was unrequited. Only fragments of her poems have survived.
