Sanctorius Sanctorius Sanctorius (1561-1636) was an Italian physiologist who pioneered the study of metabolism, and invented the clinical thermometer and a device for measuring pulse rate.

Short Biography:

Sanctorius introduced quantitative methods into medicine. For 30 years, he weighed both himself and his food, drink, and waste products. He determined that over half of normal weight loss is due to "insensible perspiration".
