Saladin (1138-1193) was a Sultan of Egypt from 1175, in succession to the Atabeg of Mosul, on whose behalf he conquered Egypt 1164-1174.
Short Biography:
He subsequently conquered Syria 1174-87, and precipitated the third Crusade by his recovery of Jerusalem from the Christians in 1187. Renowned for knightly courtesy, Saladin made peace with Richard I of England in 1192. He was a Kurd.
