Everett is born at Norfolk in England. He went to the Farleigh School in Hampshire. After his schooling he was educated at Ampleforth College in Yorkshire. He was educated there by Benedictine monks. He ran away from home to London with the dream of becoming an actor.He worked different works to sustain himself. In an interview with a American magazine he once told that he even worked as a "rent boy" or male prostitute for sustaining himself. He went to Central School of Speech and Drama but he was driven away from the school for his misbehavior and insubordination. After this he went to Scotland and got a job at the Citizens' Theatre.
The breakthrough in his career came in the
year 1981 when he acted in the West End production's Another Country. In this movie he played the role of a homosexual school boy opposite film star Kenneth Branagh. He acted in it's film version too. The film was released in 1984 and he acted in this film with Colin Firth. The other famous films acted by him are An Ideal Husband, My Best Friend's Wedding and The Next Best Thing.
He was noted once again for his role of gay friend to Julia Roberts in My Best Friend's Wedding. In this 1997 film his performance was award winning. In the movie, The Next Best Thing , he acted as Madonna's gay best friend,
