Roger David Casement (1864-1916) was a Irish nationalist.
Short Biography:
While in the British consular service he exposed the ruthless exploitation of the people of the Belgian Congo and in Peru, for which he was knighted in 1911 (degraded 1916).
He was hanged for treason by the British for his part in the Irish republican Easter Rising.
In 1914 Casement went to Germany and attempted to induce Irish prisoners of war to form an Irish brigade to take part in a republican insurrection.
He returned to Ireland in a submarine in 1916 (actually to postpone, not start, the Easter Rising), was arrested, tried for treason, and hanged.
