Rocio Durcal is, without a doubt, one of the artists with major international projection. Perhaps her secret is based among the countless artistic faces she has experienced within her 40 years of arty course.
Biography and Career :
Rocio Durcal has worked as an actress in the big screen, theater and TV. Rocio Durcal has also done a great job at interpreting with her expressive voice, any music style going from flamenco all the way to 'rancheras', as well as ballads. Her rich song repertoire has placed her among the top Spanish-speaking interpreters of the last four decades.
Rocio Durcal's story compares to one of a fairy tale. Being still a kid, with only ten years of age and with her grandfather's support, she performed at a popular TV show called: "Conozca a sus Vecinos"
(meet your neighbors), where she overwhelmed the audience with her fresh, beautiful and powerful voice.
After some time Rocio Durcal participated in a TV show called "Primer Aplauso", conducted by Jose Luis Urribari and Jesus Alvarez. This time she had the support of her 'founder', Luis Sanz, who had the idea of changing her name from Maria de Los Angeles
to something as fresh as the ROCIO and soon, adopting the name of a Spanish town, was born DURCAL becoming thus ROCIO DURCAL her professional name.
Who does not remember "Cancion de Juventud" (Youth Song)? The film and song that directed Rocio Durcal to fame at the beginning of the Sixties.... 40 years have passed already since then. It was the famous producer of Spanish cinema, Luis Sanz, who detected in her ample artistic possibilities, reason why he proposed his family to him who made cinematographic tests. These tests surpassed the expectations and Luis Lucia directs her in "Cancion de Juventud", where she gets her first starring roll. This was followed several films that quickly turned her into the favorite of the public of both continents: "La chica de Trebol" (1963), "Rocio de la Mancha" (1963), "Tengo 17 Agnos" (1964), "Mas Bonita que Niniguna" (1965),
At the age of 17 Rocio Durcal travels for the first time to the American continent, concretely to Mexico. After several presentations in amused television programs she managed to conquer the whole country. "Acompiígname" also placed Rocio Durcal as one of the favorite artists of youth. Back in Spain, she abandoned the big screen to dedicate herself completely to what she most loved: music. However, after a while she took a short break to marry famous singer: JUNIOR in 1970.
After some time Rocio Durcal decided to retake her career with more persistence than ever. In Mexico, while at a dinner party given by her record label, she met famous composer /singer, Juan Gabriel, who later composed what became 10 songs of her first album of the famous 'rancheras.' "Rocio Durcal Canta a Juan Gabriel", the first album, with all songs composed by Juan Gabriel. This album went Gold and Platinum in a short period of time. Within five years Durcal sang more than thirty songs of Juan Gabriel.
Rocio Durcal has paired up with other important artists such as Marco Antonio Solis, "El Buki", with whom she recorded two albums. In 1993, she recorded "Desaires", album produced by Joan Sebastian which one more time places her among the top artists. By the end of 1994, Rocio says farewell to Mexico, and in 1995 she released the production "Hay Amores Y Amores", produced by Roberto Livi. This album was released in Mexico, USA, Spain, Central America, Colombia
, Venezuela and Ecuador
, with "Vestida de Blanco" as the first single of the album.
Due to this album, Rocio Durcal was nominated for the Grammys under the "Latin Pop" category that same year. In 1997 she released "Juntos Otra Vez", a double album recorded along with Juan Gabriel, and composed of 20 themes.
The release of this album took place in the Degollado Playhouse of Guadalajara, and it was transmitted worldwide. In 1999, Rocio Durcal recorded once more with Roberto Livi. The album, "Para Toda La Vida" (For Ever), simply captures Rocio's sensibility. On this year she also had important presentations such as Universal Amphitheater in L.A., New York
's Madison Square, the Caesar Palace in Las Vegas
, Caraca's Teresa Carregno's Theatre and the National Auditorium in Mexico City
In tribute to her forty-year artistic anniversary, a five-CD compilation, was released by Readers Digest under the name, "Rocio Durcal: La Antologişa". The most important themes of this album are "Acompiígname" (A duet with Enrique Guzman), "Amor en el Aire", "Miís Bonita que Ninguna", "La Gata Bajo la Lluvia", among others.
In March of the same year, Rocio Durcal returned to her 'rancheras', with the realese of "Caricias", an album produce by Bebu Silvetti. Among the featured songs are, "Infiel", "Caricias", "Amor Bonito" and "Quiereme un poquito." This album became n┬║ 7 in the Billboard charts, with the first single, "Porque te Quiero".
