Robert Smythson Robert Smythson (1535-1614) was freemason of the Elizabethan country houses, including Longleat (1568-1575), Wollaton Hall (1580-1588), and Hardwick Hall (1590-1597).

Their castle-like silhouettes, symmetry, and large gridded windows are a uniquely romantic, English version of Classicism.
