Biography and Career:
Redford was born in Santa Monica, California. His father, Charles Robert Redford, was an accountant for Standard Oil, and his mother, Martha Hart who died in 1955. His father married again and he has a half-brother, William.
He studied in Nuys High School in Los Angeles, California. Natalie Wood and Don Drysdale were his classmates. He graduated in 1954 and received a baseball scholarship to the University of Colorado, where he was a pitcher and a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity.
He lost his scholarship because
of excessive drinking when he was 18 years of age. Later, he studied painting at the Pratt Institute of Art in Brooklyn. After living the painter's life in Europe, he studied acting in American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City.
He started his acting career in 1950s in New York. In 1959, he appeared as a guest start for The Untouchables, Whispering Smith, Perry Mason, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Route 66, Dr. Kildare, Playhouse 90, Tate and The Twilight Zone. He became popular in George Roy Hill's 'Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid' in 1969.
The Way We Were (1973) and The Sting (1973), both in 1973, made Redford the number one box office star for the next three years. Also, Redford was an executive producer for Downhill Racer. His debut film as a director was in 1980's 'Ordinary People' for which he won the Academy Award as the Best Director.
In 1981, he won Oscar for 'Ordinary People' and in 2002; he received Oscar for Lifetime Achievement. In 1995, Redford received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Bard College. In 2005, he received Honors at Recipient of the Kennedy Center. Redford is politically liberal, and has supported environmentalism, Native American rights, and the arts.
He married Lola Van Wagenen on 9th August 1958 and divorced in 1985. They had four children: David James (born on 5th May 1962, is a screen writer), Shauna (born on 15th November 1960, is a painter), Amy (born on 22nd October 1970, is an actress), and Scott Anthony Redford. Their first child, Scott, died of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). He married Sibylle Szaggars on 11th July 2009 and they are living together till date.
