River Phoenix (River Jude Bottom) was born on Sunday, August 23, 1970 and was a famous Academy award and Golden Globe nominated American Actor.
Biography and Career:
He had prominent juvenile roles in 'Explorers' (1985) and 'Stand By Me' (1986), reached Teen Idol status in the mid-late 80's with roles in 'A night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon' (1987), 'Running On Empty'(1988) (for which he received his Oscar nomination) and 'Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade' (1989). Phoenix was easily making the transition to adult actor (with highly acclaimed leading man roles in 'Dogfight' (1991) and 'My Own Private Idaho'(1991)) when he died of an overdose of heroin and cocaine outside the Hollywood night spot, The Viper Room on Sunday, October 31, 1993 at the age of 23.
Phoenix was due
to begin production on 'Interview with the vampire'(1994) only weeks after his death. His role was given to Christian Slater who donated his salary to Phoenix's favorite environmental charities.
He was a vegan and an active campaigner for animal rights and environmental organizations. He used his media attention to tirelessly highlight global issues, which was not a popular thing to do at the time and therefore made him stand out amongst contemporaries as intelligent, articulate and incredibly alternative.
Phoenix was also a musician. He was guitarist, singer and songwriter for his own band Aleka's Attic and also wrote and recorded alongside Red Hot Chili Pepper's guitarist John Frusciante and appeared on his 1997 solo album 'smile from the streets you hold'.
Phoenix was hailed by both critics and his peers as the best actor of his generation.
