Richard Zsigmondy Richard Zsigmondy (1865-1929) in 1903 he devised and built an ultramicroscope, in which the illumination was placed at right angles to the axis.

Short Biography:

In a conventional microscope the light source is placed parallel to the instrument's axis. This arrangement made it possible to observe gold particles with a diameter of 10-millionth of a millimetre. He won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1925.
